Twitter TweetDeck to become a paid service

Twitter TweetDeck is a social media management platform designed for digital marketers and social media professionals who run campaigns on the micro-blogging platform.

Much like Meta Business Suite for Facebook and Instagram, the Twitter TweetDeck allows for extended profile viewing and post-scheduling, which cannot be done on the native version of Twitter.

For years, TweetDeck has been a free service available to any user. However, Twitter announced this week that the platform will soon become exclusive to Twitter Blue subscribers, the website’s premium, $8 per month service rolled out after Elon Musk’s 2022 takeover.

The announcement has been met with criticism, with some concerned that it is further evidence of Twitter’s aim to move toward a comprehensive subscription model.

Twitter also announced a number of new features that will be added to TweetDeck. These include a new composer tool with additional elements, such as GIF capability, updated search tools, and new sorting options for popular and recent Tweets.

Some features, however, are to be removed, with the Teams option first for the chop. Teams allows for account sharing among multiple people, ideal for large, remote teams. Whether Teams will be replaced with something by the time the TweetDeck change comes into effect remains to be seen.

For affiliate marketers and influencers who use Twitter, the obvious takeaway here is that the cost of Twitter Blue will now need to be factored into campaign budgets.

The updates to the platform appear relatively surface-level so far, but marketers are going to have to find a workaround for the removal of the Teams feature, as this could seriously impact campaigns managed by a group of people.

This news is the latest in a long line of controversial updates made by Twitter. With the recent launch of Meta’s Threads, which amassed 10 million members within hours of going live, could Twitter’s time be up? Affiliate marketers, influencers, and content creators should be monitoring the situation closely, as it could be the start of a seismic shift in the digital landscape.

TweetDeck will be made exclusively available to Twitter Blue subscribers in around 30 days’ time.
