Meta’s Cameo-like app “Super” shut down

In yet another attempt to downsize for the sake of redirecting money, Meta has shut down another personal project. This time, the victim was Meta’s Super app, which can best be described as a take on the popular Cameo app.

This comes after a range of money-saving cuts from Meta, including a mass dropping of 15% of its staff across the world. Meta might cite downsizing but an educated guess suggests redirecting money towards the Metaverse efforts, which is being described as the 21st century equivalent of the Space Race towards virtual reality.

Meanwhile, Super was an app that, like Cameo, was designed to allow affiliates to offer personalised messages, via a pre-recorded video, to their fans. You could gift someone a shoutout.

Of the closing of the app, Meta said: “We are sad to say that Super is shutting down, and will no longer be available on February 15, 2023. When we started Super in 2020, we had hoped to create a virtual meet and greet experience that came close to what you’d expect from a real-life event like VidCon or Comic-Con. What we found we’d created, however, was a much greater opportunity for creators and fans to connect in fun and exciting ways. We saw creators and fans raise funds for good causes, launch a new set of books, test drive new jokes for standup routines, and even play trivia against one another. It was amazing to see the joy and creativity in each new Super event.”

This will be a blow to affiliate marketers, who use apps like Super and Cameo as another means of income on top of brand deals.
