Instagram tests new features to personalise suggested content

Instagram has announced a range of new features designed to streamline and further personalise suggested content on the platform.

The move comes as the company looks to focus on video content and AI-generated recommendations, in an attempt to recreate the success seen on platforms like TikTok.

Today, Instagram revealed a number of new features through which users can tailor their feeds to suit their own particular interests.

The company is testing the option to mark multiple posts in the Explore section as ‘Not Interested’, which works to “immediately hide those posts and refrain from showing you similar content in the future.”

In theory, this feature should allow users to remove content they don’t want to see in bulk, quickly refining their feed to display more of what they want to see.

Additionally, Instagram will begin testing the option for users to remove content containing specific words, phrases, or emojis from their feeds, in an effort to further personalise the platform.

Finally, users will also be able to add accounts to a Favorites list, which will push their posts higher up as well as being accessible via a dedicated Favorites feed.

The Following feature offers users the chance to view posts from just the accounts they follow, in chronological order from the last 30 days, with no suggested content on display.

Users can access Favorites and Following by tapping the Instagram logo at the top of their feed.

These new features are to be rolled out in a testing phase, with Instagram noting: “It’s important to us that people feel good about the time they spend on Instagram, so we’ll continue to work on ways to give people more control over what they see.”
