Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell by more than 80% during August, according to separate AI visibility trackers. The same abrupt decline was not recorded across every major AI platform, showing affiliate publishers and brands why mentions on a single third-party website cannot guarantee stable visibility in AI-generated answers. The cause remains unconfirmed, and the available data does not establish that OpenAI deliberately penalized Reddit.
According to Promptwatch’s daily citation tracking, Reddit accounted for an average of 3.83% of citations returned by ChatGPT Search between July 18 and August 7.
Its share began declining on August 8 before falling below 1% on August 14. Between August 14 and 17, Reddit represented an average of 0.52% of ChatGPT citations. That amounts to an 86.4% relative decline from the earlier baseline.
The calculation covers ChatGPT responses containing at least one citation. It measures Reddit’s share of those citations rather than the percentage of all ChatGPT answers that mention or rely on Reddit.
Promptwatch described the size of the decline as provisional. Its data shows when the movement happened, but it does not establish why. The company said a change in ChatGPT’s source-selection behavior was an obvious possibility, although it could not rule out a data-collection issue.
In a LinkedIn post, Searchable’s head of marketing Emilia Möller reported an 83% reduction in ChatGPT’s use of Reddit between August 9 and 18.
The analysis showed a different pattern outside ChatGPT. Reddit usage reportedly increased by 26% in Google AI Overviews, 32% in AI Mode, 6% in Perplexity, and 24% in Gemini during the same period.
Searchable also examined prompts that had previously relied on Reddit. The average number of sources included in those answers fell from 26.2 to 21.8, indicating that ChatGPT did not replace every lost Reddit citation with another domain.
These findings should not be treated as directly interchangeable with Promptwatch’s data. The analyses cover different periods and may use different prompt sets, interfaces, and definitions. Promptwatch recorded gradual Reddit declines in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode across its longer July-to-August window, while Searchable reported increases during a shorter period later in August.
Both analyses nevertheless indicate that Reddit’s visibility changed considerably more sharply in ChatGPT than it did across other AI products.
Searchable’s public ChatGPT citation tracker also shows substantial 30-day declines for arXiv, YouTube, Forbes, TechRadar, and several other publishers.
That wider movement weakens the argument that ChatGPT made a decision directed exclusively at Reddit. It could reflect a broader change in retrieval behavior, citation selection, the composition of tracked prompts, or the number of sources used in each answer.
Promptwatch identified a change in ChatGPT’s query fan-out behavior around August 8. Query fan-out describes how an AI system breaks a question into additional searches before assembling its response. However, the largest Reddit decline occurred six days later, meaning the timing alone does not prove that one change caused the other.
A decline in ChatGPT citations does not mean Reddit has stopped influencing purchasing decisions.
Research published by Reddit and WPP Media found that one in three Reddit users frequently research purchases on the platform. Its communities can still shape product discovery, brand perception, traditional search results, and direct referral traffic even when ChatGPT cites fewer Reddit pages.
Reddit also told Axios that the citation decline had no meaningful effect on its business because AI platforms currently account for a small proportion of its traffic.
Affiliate teams should therefore avoid interpreting this data as a reason to abandon Reddit. It is evidence that Reddit participation and ChatGPT visibility are different objectives and should be measured separately.
Affiliate teams should treat AI visibility as a portfolio rather than a single placement strategy:
Traditional search rankings can change, but AI citation mixes may be even more volatile. Different assistants can alter their retrieval and source-selection processes independently, without providing publishers with advance notice or a clear change log.
The Reddit decline does not prove that community content has lost its value. It demonstrates that appearing on a frequently cited platform is not the same as owning a durable position inside an AI answer.
Affiliates should not choose between SEO and GEO, or between owned content and third-party mentions. The more sustainable approach is to build credible information across the sources customers use and monitor how each AI platform responds to the questions that influence purchasing decisions.
