In this episode, Lee-Ann Johnstone sits down with Dennis Yu, CEO of BlitzMetrics and co-author of bestselling books on Facebook and TikTok advertising. With a billion dollars spent on social ads and clients including: Nike, Starbucks, and the Golden State Warriors, Dennis brings battle-tested insights on what actually works when technology threatens to commoditise every tactic.

This conversation is essential listening for affiliate managers navigating the tension between bringing capabilities in-house and maintaining profitable partnerships, as well as performance marketers seeking sustainable competitive advantages in an AI-saturated marketplace.

Talking points include:

  • User-Generated Content as Affiliate Strategy: Why authentic customer content outperforms professional creative and how to activate non-traditional affiliates
  • The Conversion API Advantage: How brands controlling conversion data can outperform traditional affiliates in paid social campaigns
  • Relationship-Driven Marketing in an AI World: Why genuine connections represent the only defensible moat against algorithmic competition

The Death of Traditional Affiliate Intermediaries And What Replaces Them

Dennis pulls no punches about the future facing traditional affiliate models. As targeting algorithms become increasingly sophisticated and AI lowers content creation costs to near zero, the “affiliate tax” that margin between customer and brand faces relentless compression. The uncomfortable truth many don't want to hear: brands with strong reputations, conversion data access, and authentic customer relationships no longer need intermediaries for most paid acquisition.

Yet this evolution creates opportunity for affiliates willing to adapt. The value proposition shifts from technical execution to relationship access. Dennis points to examples like associations, community leaders, and authentic content creators who control audiences through trust rather than targeting parameters. When an affiliate represents the hunting equipment association or manages a thriving community, they offer something Facebook's algorithm cannot replicate. The critical question for affiliate managers becomes: which partners provide genuine relationship value versus those simply arbitraging platform capabilities the brand could deploy directly?

This doesn't signal the end of affiliate marketing rather, a maturation. Successful programs will increasingly resemble partnership marketing, built on complementary strengths and audience access rather than performance arbitrage. For affiliate managers, this means cultivating deeper relationships with fewer, more strategic partners whilst simultaneously developing internal capabilities for commoditised tactics.

Why Your Best Affiliates Aren't Affiliates At All

The most viral, engaging content about brands doesn't come from professional marketers or seasoned affiliates. It comes from customers genuinely experiencing products in their daily lives. Dennis demonstrates this through World Gym's TikTok presence, where authentic member content consistently outperforms branded creative. A father working out with his son, friends attempting a dance with weights, or someone documenting their fitness transformation these organic moments resonate because they're real.

The revelation: these content creators don't consider themselves influencers or affiliates. They're simply customers sharing their experiences. When brands reach out offering to amplify their content with modest ad spend, the response is overwhelmingly positive. No complex compliance requirements, no demands for thousands per post, no professional creator expectations just appreciation that their genuine story matters to the brand.

This approach solves multiple challenges simultaneously. It generates cost-effective creative assets, builds deeper customer loyalty, provides authentic social proof, and creates sustainable content pipelines. For affiliate managers, the strategic shift involves moving upstream from traditional performance partners to identify and activate satisfied customers. The technical execution remains similar boosting content across platforms but the source material and relationship dynamics fundamentally change.

Remarketing: The Highest-ROI Channel Nobody Prioritises

When asked where to invest limited budgets for maximum impact, Dennis doesn't hesitate: remarketing audiences across every available channel. Email remarketing to engaged subscribers, social remarketing to website visitors, and his personal favourite postcard remarketing leveraging geolocation data to send physical mail featuring satellite imagery of the recipient's neighbourhood with social proof from nearby customers.

The logic is straightforward. These audiences have already demonstrated interest through direct engagement with your brand. Conversion rates dwarf cold acquisition, yet most programs dramatically underinvest in nurturing this awareness. The focus remains perpetually on new customer acquisition whilst warm audiences receive minimal attention.

This represents a structural failure in how performance marketing is typically evaluated. New customer acquisition receives credit and attribution, generating reports that justify budgets and demonstrate growth. Remarketing to existing audiences, whilst dramatically more efficient, struggles to claim credit in last-click attribution models. The result: systematic underinvestment in the highest-performing tactics.

For affiliate managers, this suggests opportunities in partnership structure. Rather than purely new customer acquisition deals, consider partnerships focused on audience development and nurturing. Affiliates who build email lists, create content that drives social media following, or generate awareness that feeds re-marketing funnels provide compounding value beyond immediate conversions.
