If your affiliate program has hundreds of inactive partners gathering dust, this episode reveals exactly how to bring them back. Alex Hitt, an affiliate marketer who built thriving communities of hundreds of active members, shares the hotel management principles he uses to create loyalty that goes far beyond commission payments. Lee-Ann and Alex discuss why most programs accidentally kill engagement, how to scale personalisation without burning out, and why one 30-minute weekly call does more for retention than any email campaign.
Talking Points Include:
Most affiliate managers assume commission is the relationship. Pay your partners, send promotional emails, track conversions, repeat. But Alex learned from managing hotels that 80% of people leave their jobs not because of salary, but because of their boss. When you're running an affiliate program, you're essentially the boss of that community. If affiliates only hear from you when there's a sale to push, you've already created a transactional dynamic that breeds disloyalty.
Alex's number-one ranked hotel offered every guest something small but valuable for free at check-in – a bottle of water, a snack from the gift shop, something they actually needed in that moment. It wasn't expensive, but it showed genuine care. The same principle applies to affiliate programs: give your partners something valuable before they ask, whether that's expert access, genuine networking opportunities, or simply your time and attention without a sales pitch attached.
Many affiliate managers invest in building custom community platforms, setting up Circle or Mighty Networks accounts, and wondering why engagement dies after the initial signup. Alex discovered that these platforms work best as repositories for recordings and resources, not as the primary space where community happens. Real connection requires faces, voices, and real-time interaction.
Instead of relying on community platforms, Alex hosts weekly 30-minute Zoom events where affiliates can drop in, ask questions, meet other partners, and feel genuinely connected. There's no pressure to attend, no mandatory participation, just an open door at the same time every week. Even affiliates who never join live still watch the recordings and feel part of something bigger. The key insight: community isn't a platform you build, it's an experience you create consistently.
Alex compares affiliate onboarding to checking guests into a hotel. At his former property, staff didn't just hand over keys; they physically escorted guests to elevators, pressed buttons for them, held doors open, and sometimes walked VIP guests all the way to their rooms. Guests were perfectly capable of finding their own rooms, but that level of care created an experience worth remembering.
Most affiliate programs send a welcome email with login credentials and call it onboarding. Better programs might include a resource guide or video tutorial. But truly exceptional programs put the calendar invite directly into an affiliate's hand (metaphorically), confirm they've saved it, follow up the day before their first event, and personally welcome them when they attend. This white-glove approach seems time-consuming, but it creates the kind of first impression that turns one-time partners into long-term advocates.
