Welcome to a brand new season of the Affiliate Marketing Podcast with your host, Lee-Ann Johnstone. Our guest this week is John Wright, Co-Founder and CEO of StatsDrone, whose unique journey gives him rare insight into what makes partnerships succeed or fail.
In this conversation, we tackle the contentious issue of data ownership in iGaming, explore why trust remains the biggest barrier to effective collaboration, and reveal the tactical approaches that separate partnerships that scale from those that stagnate. Whether you're an affiliate manager looking to build stronger relationships with your partners, or an affiliate seeking to maximise your operator partnerships, this episode delivers actionable strategies you can implement immediately.
We're delighted to have Mate Affiliates supporting this season of the podcast – thank you for making these conversations possible.
Talking points include:
John Wright's journey into affiliate marketing began with an unusual detour – professional gambling and card counting. After studying AI and robotics engineering, he was initially skeptical of his friend's card counting team until he saw the results firsthand. This led him into bonus hunting, poker, and sports betting, which eventually exposed him to the marketing side of iGaming. His experience working as a player manager, VIP manager, and affiliate manager on the operator side gave him unique insights into both sides of the partnership equation – insights he's now channeling into solving data problems for affiliates.
One of the most contentious issues in iGaming partnerships is data transparency. Unlike traditional affiliate marketing, iGaming operates with fragmented platforms where operators control most of the data flow. John argues that this creates a fundamental trust problem on both sides – affiliates don't trust operators to share complete data, while some operators deal with affiliates who aren't always transparent about their traffic quality. The solution isn't just better tools, but moving toward real-time, transaction-based data sharing that both parties can rely on. John predicts this transformation is about two years away, driven by affiliates demanding more control over their own performance metrics.
The conversation reveals that successful partnerships go far beyond negotiating better CPA rates or securing homepage placements. John emphasises that relationship building remains the most underrated skill in affiliate management, sharing how simple gestures like Christmas cards from affiliate managers made lasting impressions that motivated him to go above and beyond as an affiliate. The key is treating each partner with respect regardless of their current traffic volume, and moving beyond transactional interactions to create genuine partnerships that include content collaboration, data sharing, and innovative campaign strategies.
