What happens when passion meets persistence in affiliate marketing?

George Sullivan turned repeated program rejections into fuel for building The Sole Supplier a content-first publisher that now drives millions in sales across Europe's biggest fashion retailers. In this candid conversation with host Lee-Ann Johnstone, George reveals the brutal early days of building an affiliate business, the moment everything changed, and why the industry's future belongs to publishers who can make people feel something.

This episode is essential listening for affiliate managers who want to understand what life looks like on the other side of the partnership and for aspiring publishers who need proof that starting with nothing but conviction can lead somewhere extraordinary.

Talking points include:

  • The psychological impact of program rejections on early-stage publishers (and how managers can turn gatekeeping into guidance)
  • Why putting a human face to your brand remains the most powerful growth lever in an AI-saturated landscape
  • The shift from siloed marketing departments to integrated teams and what it means for partnership budgets

When Rejection Becomes Rocket Fuel

George doesn't sugarcoat the early struggles. Working a recruitment job by day and building The Sole Supplier by night, he faced rejection after rejection from affiliate programs. The turning point? A £2,000 morning with JD Sports after nine months of earning virtually nothing. That single day validated everything but it was the feedback from programs that initially turned him down that proved most valuable.

If you're an affiliate manager and you reject a publisher that you don't think is the right quality, that should spur them on to keep doing more of the right things to eventually get accepted,” George explains. The lesson cuts both ways: rejection without constructive feedback wastes an opportunity to shape tomorrow's top performers. Affiliate managers who take thirty seconds to explain why an application fell short and what would need to change aren't just being decent. They're investing in the ecosystem.

The broader point matters for anyone running programs: those approval queues aren't just numbers on a screen. Behind each application sits someone who might be building the next major traffic source for your brand. Treat them accordingly.

People Buy From People – Especially Now

Two years into building The Sole Supplier, George made a decision that changed everything: he put his face on camera. The immediate result? Follower counts surged, engagement rates climbed, and brand enquiries multiplied. Fast forward to today, and that same principle has only intensified.

In the era of AI content flooding the internet, human beings celebrating their experience, making people feel something, connecting with people that relate to them that's where the money is right now,” George argues. Transactional content faces existential pressure from AI shopping assistants. Search behaviours are fragmenting across platforms. Meanwhile, content that creates genuine connection and shifts brand perception across the entire funnel has never been more valuable.

For affiliate managers, this creates both opportunity and obligation. The opportunity: partnerships with publishers who can deliver authentic storytelling alongside conversions represent compounding value over time. The obligation: recognising that value means moving beyond pure last-click attribution and fixed CPA budgets that fail to account for top-of-funnel influence.

Breaking Down the Budget Silos

George describes sitting in meetings where brand managers, performance teams, and paid media leads finally occupy the same room often for the first time. When marketing departments stop competing for credit and start collaborating toward shared goals, everything shifts. Publishers who can demonstrate impact across awareness, consideration, and conversion suddenly become strategic assets rather than tactical line items.

The conversion rate of the top three publishers is crazy higher than most every other marketing channel at that brand,” George notes. “They're also giving a load of free awareness because they're content-full. What other marketing channel has people at the front of content, provides awareness and conversions?

The challenge for affiliate managers becomes advocating internally for the channel's true value. When a publisher consistently outperforms other channels on both engagement and conversion, limiting their budget because “that's the affiliate allocation” represents a strategic failure. Smart brands are already making this shift bringing affiliate managers into broader marketing discussions and allowing performance to dictate investment rather than arbitrary departmental boundaries.
